The men's cross-country team defended its No. 2 national ranking Saturday, winning the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational in Winneconne, Wis. NYU placed three runners in the top six and scored 68 points overall, barely defeating No. 6 Haverford College (71 points).
Running on an 8,000-meter course at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, senior co-captain Ryan Williams set the team pace, finishing second overall with a time of 24:11. Williams, who finished third last year, improved his time by 23 seconds this year, but still finished behind Brian Butzler of Wisconsin-Whitewater, who won the race in 24:01.
Junior Jesse Schneider was the next NYU finisher, placing fifth with a time of 24:17. Schneider was followed by senior co-captain Hany Abdallah in sixth place (24:21).
The men's cross-country team returns to action in two weeks when it travels to Waltham, Massachusetts for the UAA Championships at Brandeis University on Oct. 27. Races begin at 10 a.m.
