Annual festival of nonstop music, film

This week more than 120,000 artists, filmmakers, industry innovators and fans will take over the city. It will be five days of film and frenzy, panels and parties, and speeches and showcases.

From Oct. 20 to Oct. 24 College Music Journal's Music Marathon and Film Festival will set up shop in NYU's Rosenthal Pavilion in the Kimmel Center. This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Music Marathon and the 15th year of the Film Festival.

CMJ prides itself on showcasing the best in new music and film. It has featured artists like the Arcade Fire, David Bowie, Cheap Trick, Daft Punk, Cardigans, Johnny Cash, Sonic Youth and the Decemberists in the past. Previous films have included "Fight Club," "American History X" and "Pulp Fiction."

Once again, artists of various genres — ranging from hip-hop to indie-rock — will perform at select locations. Venues like Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall, Knitting Factory, Highline Ballroom and Santos Party House will be among the many to host concerts and viewings.

From buzz bands to big headliners, the marathon boasts an eclectic lineup: Busta Rhymes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Every Avenue, Hercules and Love Affair, the Lovely Feathers, Múm, French Horn Rebellion, Nightmare of You, Savoir Adore, Portugal. the Man, Pissed Jeans, Pitbull, Ted Leo + Pharmacists, YACHT, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's Alec Ounsworth, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, and more.

Some of NYU's own — NYLE, Menya and Max Vernon — will make appearances. As winner of NYU's Battle of the Bands on Oct. 9, The Brothers Frank will also be a part of the CMJ lineup.
