Gallatin junior Ariel Kanter believes that if you're going to eat, you might as well eat what you want.
Her friend and NYU junior Whitney Edwards agrees.
"We don't do the 'no butter, no oil' thing," she said.
Kanter and Edwards are the co-founders of noshandtell.com, a website for foodies, made by foodies — Kanter and Edwards to be exact. Both girls are passionate about food (Edwards' mother is a caterer and grew up around gourmet food) and last March, they decided to channel that passion into a blog titled Nosh and Tell. Seven months later, they changed the blog into an actual website by the same name.
The site offers restaurant reviews, original recipes and modified recipes. The ladies find the recipes from a variety of sources: from one of many cookbooks they own, online or even from friends (their friend Liz finds amazing dessert recipes).
While Edwards typically bakes, and Ariel usually cooks and writes restaurant reviews, both give an equal amount of love and dedication to the page. So much, in fact, that Edwards added it to her resume and found jobs since doing so.
But this isn't simply a way to get noticed. For them, it's about their undying love for food.
"It makes me happy," Edwards said.
Kanter receives a sense of gratification from the website.
"It's ours — it's something we started and we're so proud of it," she said.
The two also recognize how much help has come their way from the support of friends, family and fans. In celebration of the launch, they are hosting a party at the bar Superdive (200 Avenue A) this Tuesday at 10:30 p.m.
"Everyone's been so supportive. The party is to celebrate [the fans]," Edwards said.
The event also doubles as a charity. There will be a raffle to benefit the non-profit organization Share Our Strength. SOS is a hunger-relief organization that focuses on helping American youth. As of Thursday, the girls raised more than $400, almost half of their goal of $1,000. Raffle tickets can be purchased either on their website or at the event for a dollar.
Ultimately, the pair wish for the site to become a trusted resource and continue to be a place where foodies can go to learn about food.
"We want to be recognized by Martha Stewart," Edwards said when asked about what it would be like in a dream world. "Like to be in 'Martha's Circle.' We love her!"
Kanter added: "This has been a Cinderella story of turning nothing into something great."
