Students living in Third Avenue North residence hall will no longer receive paper package notification slips; from now on, they'll receive e-mails instead.
The new system, which took effect last week, was developed by a resident assistant at Third North and is currently being piloted there, said Craig Jolley, NYU's director of residential education.
Jolley said the system could possibly extend to both Lafayette Street and Founders residence halls in January, as well as other dorms at the start of the fall 2010 semester.
"Our goal is to have something in place at most of the larger halls by the fall," Jolley said.
Jolley said the system was implemented to minimize problems associated with the large amount of packages delivered to the Third North mailroom.
"We're looking to find new ways to make receiving, logging, notification and delivery more efficient and user-friendly," he said. "Strengthening our relationships with the various carriers will help us reach the overall goal of providing better service to students."
Many Third North residents find the new system convenient. Gallatin freshman Jesse Warner said it will make it easier for her to keep in touch with her family.
Students living in other residence halls look forward to the system's expansion.
Steinhardt junior Eric Anderson, who lives in Palladium, said he values the eco-friendliness of the system.
"Anything that replaces paper with digitization is probably a good thing," Anderson said.
CAS freshman and Hayden resident Aalok Patel said: "It will be useful for my roommate, considering he still doesn't know how to open his mailbox."
