New faces of coffee on campus

The next time you need coffee before your 8 a.m. World Cultures class, you might notice that Starbucks is a whole lot brighter.

"Starbucks and NYU Dining wanted to refresh the location with brighter, energy-efficient lighting, brighter paint and new furniture to allow students more space for laptops and socializing with friends," said Owen Moore, NYU's director of dining services.

Starbucks at Faye's is one of the busiest dining locations on campus, serving 1,700 customers daily. Renovations began on Jan. 2 and continued for two weeks, allowing the staff time to train in the new environment.

To help minimize the notoriously long line at Faye's, a greeter will now take orders while customers wait on line.

In addition to renovations in front of the counter, changes were also made behind it. Breakfast sandwiches have been added to the menu, and two ovens have been installed to warm breakfast pastries.

However, not all students like the renovations to Faye's. CAS freshman Emily Jennings feels the new design detracts from the previous comfortable atmosphere.

"There's no place to lounge around," Jennings said. "I feel like I'm sitting at a desk. I legitimately don't like it as much."

Along with the changes to Faye's, Java City Eco Grounds at the Weinstein residence hall was transformed into a Peet's Coffee and Tea.

Java City smoothies, breakfast items, pastries and to-go meal exchange items are still available at Peet's.

"[Peet's] has a reputation for high-quality, hand-roasted coffee," Moore said. "Peet's continues our requirements as a socially responsible partner and is a great cup of coffee."

Steinhardt freshman Dylan Mollway welcomes the change, along with what he believes to be better coffee.

"I feel like the food hasn't changed, just the coffee is so much better," he said. "It's even better than Starbucks, for sure."

But like changes to Starbucks, some students do not approve of Peet's recent renovations.

"If I had to choose between a Starbucks peppermint mocha and a Java City Mayan Mocha, I would choose Java City every time," Tisch junior McKenzie Davis said. "I'll never go to Peet's in my life."
