The NYU wrestling team competed in the Metro/New England Duals this past weekend, a six-way meet where three teams from the Metropolitan Conference — NYU, Hunter College and The College of New Jersey — competed against three from the New England Conference — Williams College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Roger Williams University.
The Violets, still not at full force due to several injuries, went 1-2; their record on the season now stands at 9-9. But like last weekend's New York State Championships, several wrestlers posted outstanding wins during the competition.
Competing in the 141-pound weight class, junior Clement Bommier notched a pin against Chris Simmons of Williams. Bommier also recorded a win against WPI, although it was not a pin.
In his match against WPI, senior Michael Cunningham (197-pound weight class), notched a 1:09 fall.
Junior captain Matt Magill (157) went 2-1 at the competition. He recorded a forfeit against WPI and a 4-0 decision against Roger Williams. But in his biggest match of the day, Magill lost a tight, 3-0 contest against nationally-ranked Carl Breitenstein of Williams.
Sophomore Jamie Myers went 1-1 at 197 pounds. Despite suffering a technical fall against Williams' Ryan Malo early in the day, Myers recovered and defeated nationally-ranked Nick Cambi of Roger Williams in a 1-0 thriller.
"I had lost to him 4-0 in the finals at Ithaca, so I knew he was beatable," Myers said. "I'm glad I got the win."
Myers stressed the importance of the whole team maintaining momentum as the season draws to a close.
"It is an individual sport, but we have to keep that team mentality," he said.
On Feb. 6, the wrestlers will head to Chicago for the UAA Championships and a dual-meet against Elmhurst College later that night.
"There are only a few weeks left," Myers said. "Now's the time to motivate ourselves."
