Yesterday, Greek goddess of the blogosphere Arianna Huffington launched "HuffPost College," a new section of the Huffington Post that highlights pieces from more than 60 universities across the nation.
Given that WSN is among the student publications featured, and the fact that the Huffington Post is the most linked-to website on the Internet according to Technorati, we here at WSN are very excited about this new project.
We can hardly say it better than Ms. Huffington herself: "HuffPost College features voices from colleges and universities all around the country and offers a real-time snapshot of what's going on in the lives of the nation's 19 million college students — from coverage of the latest trends and sports happenings to more serious issues such as freedom of expression on campus and the rising cost of tuition."
This new website will hopefully unite college students nationwide in an unprecedented way. Readers will now have a portal into the goings-on at a diverse set of the nation's universities. Rather than republishing pieces and linking to the original source as other aggregators like UWire used to do, the Huffington Post sends users directly to the article as published on the paper's website, which means that young journalists have a great opportunity for massive exposure.
Frankly, journalism majors could probably use the boost.
The new website also means that stories about the NYU community will potentially have a much larger platform for global exposure if they are picked up on the HuffPost College homepage.
We hope it will be a place that spotlights the many ideas and issues that face today's college student. The main story on the homepage yesterday was about the exploding amount of student loans that so many students must incur simply to get through four years of college.
We also hope that it spotlights things that are not so universal. At NYU, students barely have what anyone would consider a "typical" college experience. This new partnership with HuffPost College will allow our community to share that experience with the rest of the world. And as we take a closer look at the unique experiences of other students across the country, hopefully it will provide some much-needed perspective on our cosmopolitan life here in the Big Apple.
