An impromptu tap performance to Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie,” comparisons between Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and the lyrics of Tupac Shakur, a speech framed around a pivotal moment of the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” — this was the commencement ceremony for the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Often thought of as some of NYU’s most eclectic students, Gallatin’s class of 2013 gathered at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center to receive its send-off. Much of the ceremony focused on the central theme of learning as a continuous experience that extends outside of the classroom and into an ever-transforming world. Faculty speaker Gregory Erickson told students to remember their time at college was not designed to immediately transform them into new people. Instead, he said it serves as a time to make memories that would redefine who the students are, while dean Susanne Wofford called the members of the graduating class the “rock and roll star[s] from the Village.”
