Violet Booster club celebrates 30 years of support to sports program

The NYU Violet Booster club is revving up to partake in its 30th year of existence.

Since 1983, the club has given supporters, parents and proud alums a channel to donate money to the NYU Athletics Department to enhance it, as well as support its ongoing operations. In return, the Violet Booster club gives several benefits to boosters in order to not only thank them for their generous donations, but also to encourage them to keep supporting the NYU Violets.

These benefits to boosters include a 2013-14 NYU Basketball season ticket book, catered food and an open bar following every NYU home game and post game receptions with fellow boosters, alums, parents, coaches and athletes. Another benefit boosters receive for donating is that they are given the chance to meet people like them who support NYU athletics whether it’s other boosters, alumni, or athletes.

The money that the booster club has received has gone to improving the NYU athletic experience by ensuring the upkeep of programming, improving facilities throughout the athletics department and to support athletic-based scholarship in order to ensure that some of the best athletes from around the country are coming to NYU.

The goal of the booster club is to improve the athletic experience of NYU athletes. On what the booster club had done for his sport, freshman Owen Lin, a member of the NYU golf team, explains that “we are able to have to best equipment because of the boosters. We’re able to stay competitive with the funds.”

Not only does the booster club benefit varsity sports, it also aids the intramural program. Because of the additional funds made by the club, NYU is able to offer these intramural sports with competent referees and great competition and practice locations.

“The intramurals are great, they’re a lot of fun, they go smoothly and the accommodations are great,” said Al Shin, a student at Steinhardt and intramural basketball player.

Fellow student Esteban Jaramillo, an intramural soccer player, agreed.

“The whole experience really makes it seem like the real thing,” Jaramillo said. “The refs, the fields, and the transportation provided by the school really make intramurals stand out for me at NYU.”

To join the booster club, an annual donation of $70 is required. The booster club accepts gifts through the Internet, mail and through matching gifts between companies, individuals and charities.
