Sometimes, things finally seem to fall into place.

The NYU baseball team rebounded in a pair of doubleheaders at MCU Park against the Maccabees of Yeshiva University on Friday and the Fords of Haverford College on Saturday. The Violets (7-13) seem to have finally found their groove as they won three of the four games, ending a six-game losing streak.

NYU swept the day against Yeshiva and kept the Maccabees winless on the season (0-10) with 5-0 and 8-4 victories. The Violets broke this one wide open in the third inning, scoring three runs, most notably an inside-the-park home run from junior left fielder Adrian Spitz. Freshman Chad Johnstone pitched a gem in the first game, holding Yeshiva scoreless through six innings to record his first career win. To finish the job, freshman Tom Ventura closed the opener and completed the shutout.

The second win of the doubleheader though did not come as easily. NYU had to come back from an early three-run deficit following a rough outing for senior pitcher Jacob Bader, who allowed four runs in the first two innings. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, the Violets’ bats came alive as they tallied three more and never looked back, adding two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Freshman Jack Kurtenbach helped cool down the Maccabees with three scoreless innings in relief and five strikeouts. Sophomore right fielder Michael Vokulich led the offense with two runs and two RBIs.

NYU split a pair of extra-innings games against Haverford College (10-5) on Saturday. The Violets lost to the Fords 5-2 after 10 innings in the first game. Sophomore Pitcher Chase Denison did all he could for his team as he allowed only one run through 7 2/3 innings, but NYU’s offense was unable to capitalize. The team’s bullpen also struggled late, as sophomore Matthew Millus uncharacteristically blew his first save of the season in the ninth to tie the score at 2-2. Matthew Wells gave up three in the 10th, giving NYU the loss.

In the closer, the Violets were able to redeem themselves behind another stellar performance from their starting pitcher. This time it was freshman Colman Hendershot, who went five innings without giving up an earned run and struck out six batters. Going into the top of the seventh with a 3-2 lead, Millus faltered again, allowing Haverford to score two runs. Sophomore Christian Bloom did not shy away from the big moment though as he tied the score in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth inning, freshman shortstop Ryan McLaughlin got himself into scoring position with a leadoff double and was able to make it home after Spitz’s bunt led to a bad throw from the Fords. After a good weekend of solid play, sophomore third baseman Billy Griffo admired his team’s resilience.

“We just were able capitalized on the critical moments of the game and come through when it mattered most,” Griffo said.

NYU will hit the field once again on Friday when they host the City College of New York in Coney Island at 4 p.m.
