Trends appear in the fashion and beauty scene all the time. However, a scary new trend seems to be catching on — and fast. Microblading is a form of face tattooing meant to shape and fill your eyebrows so they look as natural and full as possible. Celebrities and vloggers such as Meagan Good, Bella Thorne, Olivia Palermo and Zuri Hall have tried this fashion fad.

The small, pen-like needle used for microblading creates fine hairs for natural-looking eyebrows. Unlike real tattoos, micro-blading is semi-permanent lasting up to three years depending on factors such as skin type and routine. The process fills in areas where there is fine or little hair and gives your eyebrows a consistent thickness. Many people opt for microblading instead of spending time on their eyebrows in the morning.

In New York City, salons such as Brows by Renee in Midtown East or EverTrue Microblading Salon in the Flatiron District are lauded for doing amazing work on clients’ eyebrows. Pricing typically ranges from $700-$900, varying by salon and including various amenities. While preparing for your initial treatment, it’s suggested that you don’t consume anything that will thin out your skin such as alcohol or medicines like aspirin, both which may cause more bleeding. But don’t fret — during the actual process, a numbing cream is applied to the skin.

NYU students, such as Steinhardt freshman Delaney Matthews, had mixed views of this process and permanent makeup in general.

“If someone wants to do it they should,” Matthews said. “I wouldn’t tattoo any makeup — I would be nervous it wouldn’t look the way I want it or that I would get bored of how it looks. It’s fun to mix up makeup every day and if it was tattooed I wouldn’t be able to do that as often. I’ve seen some cool tattoo makeup though. If other people do it, it usually looks good.”

Steinhardt freshman Christina Louder said she sees the advantages of microblading, but she probably wouldn’t do it.

“I guess I understand why people do it,” Louder said. “It does seem convenient, and it likely saves time in the morning, but I’m not sure I’d do it. Never say never, though, especially with how carefree I am with things like that.”

Whether you’re daring enough to try microblading or you decide to stick to tweezers, maintaining the defining features of your face will always be on trend.
