The weather's finally getting warmer (and then colder, and then warmer again). In any case, spring is here. That means it's time to modify the wardrobe to prepare for sunshine and spring rain. Here are a few trends for the closet.
Lace
Patterned, lace-like tights were all the rage this winter and they're carrying over to the spring. Keep the tights you already have and update your wardrobe with some new frilly pieces. Look for pieces that have it in unexpected places, like your back or shoulders, to give off a subtly sensual look without being too sheer. And who doesn't love a look that's reminiscent of lingerie done right?
Shoulders
Get ready to show off your shoulders this season. Whether it's through shoulder pads or cut-outs, people's eyes will be drawn to this part of the body. Lucky for us, it's pretty much impossible for this part of the body not to look good. Keep donning your blazers because they keep the look structured and hip. Or think basic, flowy tank tops.
"The blazer is an easy way to dress things up with a little bit of structure," CAS sophomore Alexandra Elizabeth Shaheen said.
One-Piece
Jumpsuits and rompers are versatile pieces that can be worn day or night — opt for loose and flowing, or choose fitted and tailored for a more sophisticated twist. Consider intricate designs or simple solids, single-shouldered or cinched in waist or harem-like bottoms. Combine the look with knee or thigh-high socks, layer them with tights, and enjoy a new innovative aspect to the look.
"Rompers are fuss-free and comfortable," Gallatin freshman Abby Echiverri said. "It's still chilly out though, so I stole the over-the-knee socks idea from this fall's runways."
Glitz
Sparkle and shine are no longer just for nighttime. Give any outfit a pick-me-up with a hint of metallic. Think bold jewelry, a shiny bag, the American Apparel disco pants and their shiny ruched tube bra in gold. Bedazzled attire in moderation is a nice stylish touch.
Navy
There's nothing better than the nautical motif overshadowing every window display. Inspirations from several designers have prompted the resurgence of the navy sea clothes. Notice how some of the nautical outfits have a French twist to it — you can thank Coco Chanel for that. But you don't need a whole lot to adopt this trend; a pair of dangling anchor earrings will do. For those who are ready to completely jump on the boat this spring, try a Breton navy-blue-and-white-striped top, a navy blue jacket embellished with ropes and double-breasted gold buttons, or cascade-ruffled tops.
