Published March 2, 2010

Early Tuesday morning a car overran the protective barriers surrounding Washington Square Park and drove into Washington Square Arch.

According to students, the accident occurred sometime around 9:00 AM.

LSP freshman Julia Henderson said that on her way to her 9:15 AM class, she saw a red SUV parked in front of the arch and five or six park officials speaking with two men. It was unclear whether one of the two men was the driver of the car.

There are minor damages to the arch, including a chip to one of the arch's legs. Several protective barriers were also damaged.

The cause of the accident is still uncertain.

The following are pictures of the damage.
