Mid-Week Roundup: Week of Jan. 25

Published January 27, 2011

We'll start our mid-week news roundup with some bad news: 45 percent of us wily college students aren't learning much in college, according to "Academically Adrift, Limited Learning on College Campuses," a study co-authored by NYU prof Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa of the University of Virginia. Specifically, 45 percent of more than 2,300 undergraduates "show no significant improvement in the key measures of critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing by the end of their sophomore years." Even worse, the New York Times says mental health of college freshmen has reached an all-time low.

Maybe we're not learning because we're too busy airing our dirty laundry on Facebook while Mark Zuckerberg makes a quick buck. But on the bright side, soon you'll be able to play Oregon Trail and Carmen San Diego while you're procrastinating on the good 'book.

Meanwhile, here at WSN we're getting pretty excited for Club Fest today and the continuation of the Gallatin Green Food Festival, which is on through Friday.

Speaking of good green ideas, NYU grad students Nien Lam and Sue Ngo have created shirts that change color when exposed to air pollution. The tees feature cute pink lungs that sprout blue veins when they detect dirty air. Getting far less press is NYU grad student Miriam Simun's Human Cheese project, which is exactly what it sounds like. Simun makes cheese out of human breast milk: local, sustainable, but … so, so wrong.

The latest large chunk of cash gifted to NYU Langone comes in the form of $4.2 million from the Kaplan family, which will help the hospital open a Stem Cell/Bone Marrow transplant center. Sean Avery was also spotted "donating" to NYU Langone — the Rangers player is one of several celebrities who are featured posing naked on shirts to raise awareness for Langone's cancer research.
