A city perhaps even more diverse than New York, Buenos Aires offers a unique blend of Latin and European charm. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture with Spanish language classes, and content classes are also offered in both Spanish and English.
A third of the population lives in the Argentinean capital city, and the citizens of Buenos Aires — the Portents — are a mix of cultures from around the world. Millions of Europeans immigrated to the nation in the early 20th century, and many immigrants have come from Asia and the Middle East as well. Students can take in this amalgamation of cultures in the food, language, customs and architecture.
Students can also travel the country and explore the geographically rich and diverse land. Previous study abroad students have hiked the Patagonian Mountains, climbed glaciars (like giant icebergs), and swum at some of the most beautiful beaches. There are also many NYU-sponsored trips around Argentina. Classes will often take students on trips to enrich the topics discussed in class.
Anything and everything is available when nightlife is concerned. There are many movie theaters and concerts. But keep in mind, everything on the Argentinean schedule runs late. Dinner ends around midnight and clubs do not open until 2 a.m. Most Argentineans do not drink in excess, so it is always easy to spot tourists.
Soccer — or football — is a way of life for Porteños. While tickets are tough to get, and the games are always sold out, every student should attend at least one soccer match. It is truly an experience to witness 60,000 fans chanting and singing for their favorite team.
Buenos Aires is also one of the most welcoming cities in South America of the LGBT community. There are many LGBT-friendly restaurants and bars in the city.
Porteños are extremely friendly and are known for their relaxed nature, and they will make anxious students feel at ease about studying abroad in beautiful and eclectic Buenos Aires, Argentina.
