I don't completely grasp how Anna Wintour and Roberta Myers craft hundreds of pages each month, consistently presenting something new and interesting to their readers. But, after spending months producing this edition, I have a much better idea. I was lucky, on this first try, to start during the fall.
Spring fashion is playful and girly, but there is only so much a designer can do with floral prints and sun dresses. Though it may not be as fun as its spring counterpart, fall fashion is typically much edgier, presenting new experiences, new ways to wear clothes with new fabrics and silhouettes. New beginnings, you can call it — much like the beginning of an academic year.
There were some tremendous standouts this season, like Alexander Wang's thigh highs, Moschino Cheap & Chic's young, yet timeless jackets, Chanel's mega fur show, Alice + Olivia's flouncy party dresses and undeniably, the late Alexander McQueen's last works of art.
Part of the excitement about producing this issue was the timing — Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week was happening just blocks uptown. I loved listening to editors after presentations, hearing that Zac Posen looked to cartoons for inspiration and that Ports 1961 found her woman traversing the desert, trying to find her way.
For readers who find fashion so blase — wondering why I continue to muse on the subject — well, let me tell you: fashion is everywhere. It's not just the shoes or clothes you wear, it's the way you carry yourself in those shoes, whether they are from Target or Christian Louboutin.
I hope you enjoy this issue and find an idea, perhaps a trend you hope to pick up the next time you're on Fifth Avenue. I already know what I'll be looking for this fall.
