Simon Spurr has remained quite the occupied man this year. After consulting on Tommy Hilfiger's spring collection, which showed this week to strong review, he presented his own work at Milk Studios in Chelsea. The show — his fourth season designing under his own moniker — was perhaps the men's collection in New York to beat.

Mr. Spurr turned to sharp, visceral tailoring. Unlike Gucci and Thom Browne, who have at times brought suiting a clown thin vibe, he turned to breathable proportions that fit remarkably. Two suits, done with contrasting strips of material, were interesting to the eye. The first iteration, in charcoal and black thick alternating stripes, was catchy. The second, though, was more casual with navy substituted in for grey. It will be an easier option for power brokers hoping to add the label to their closet.

The collection also took a turn through the English countryside, with Simon Spurr boys in calf high black leather boots. V-necks in black and off-white paired with straight leg trousers offered the show's only casual garments.

For outerwear Mr. Spurr dabbled in a few categories: car coats, trenches, bombers and anoraks. Sleeves were all done in black leather with ribbing at the top. A plum trench, in the same style, popped. The collection's only real color came in these few violets and burgundies that punctuated the 40 looks of petrol, beige and white.

I wonder when Simon's name will be thrown into the hat to lead one of the European menswear lines after the game of musical chairs between Dior, Vuitton and Marc Jacobs winds down. If anything, he could give Kim Jones a run for his money.
