NYU's Two Birds, One Stone organization has partnered with the Dunkin' Donuts in University Hall to provide leftover doughnuts to Caring Community, an organization dedicated to providing meals, classes and other services to low-income seniors.
TBOS is a service club dedicated to reducing waste in dining halls by redistributing leftover food to community organizations in need.
The club approached Campus Dining Services about working with the Dunkin' Donuts to deliver leftover food, said James Castiglioni, TBOS president and Stern senior.
"I think it's a good and easy way to help out the underprivileged people of our community," CAS freshman and club member Emily Jennings said. "If food is going to be thrown away anyways, it's better to give it to people who really need it."
The club generally collects about 50 pounds of food per collection, said Gallatin senior Sami Feld, the club's co-president.
"We've been operating in the dining halls for three, going on four, years," Feld said.
The program has changed dramatically since it started in 2006, Castiglioni said.
The recent partnership with Dunkin' Donuts was part of TBOS's plan to expand. The organization previously collected food from only two NYU dining halls — Hayden and Weinstein.
"In the past couple of years we've been trying to expand to other dining halls where it is logistically possible," Feld said.
According to Tracy James, the location manager of the NYU Dunkin' Donuts, the number of leftovers varies based on the business of the store.
Volunteers are expected to pick up leftover doughnuts from Dunkin' Donuts at 8 p.m. and drop off deliveries in the morning at Caring Community four days a week.
