Today the professor was identified as Sam Roweis.

An NYU employee told the New York Daily News that Roweis, 37, and his wife had been arguing over the care of their twins, a boy and a girl who were born prematurely about a year ago.

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information of the New York Police Department could not comment on the situation but NYU spokesperson John Beckman confirmed the incident.

"The University offers its most profound sympathies to his family and loved ones," Beckman said. "It is always a matter of great sorrow to lose a member of our community so suddenly."

Roweis was an associate professor in NYU's computer science department and a member of the Vision Learning Graphics Group. Roweis had previously taught at the University of Toronto and was a research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This is the second suicide to occur on campus this academic year. On Nov. 3, a student jumped from the 10th floor of the Bobst Library.

The University has many resources for anyone in need of help. NYU partners with Carebridge, which provides free, confidential 24/7 support to employees and can be reached at 800-437-0911.
