Last Friday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority released a revised proposal outlining the money-saving changes that will be made to the city's bus and subway service.
Among the changes, the Z subway line, which was slated for elimination, will continue to run. Additionally, trains will still run every 20 minutes between 2 and 5 a.m., despite previous plans to reduce their frequency during those hours.
However, most of the proposed service cuts will remain unchanged. The W subway line will be eliminated, while the Q line will be extended to Astoria and the N line will run local in Manhattan. The M line will be eliminated, while an extended V line will take its place north of Essex Street. And the G line will be shortened; it will terminate at Court Square.
The W line, which stops at Eighth and Prince Streets, is a vital means of transport for many NYU students.
"It helps so many people commute everyday," said CAS freshman and commuting student Jessie Pimentel, who uses the W line to get to class. "It's easy, practical and you can get anywhere."
For now, the revised proposal is awaiting approval from the authority's board, MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said.
"Between now and the time when the board needs to vote to act on those measures, there may be a change in the state's financial situation, in our financial situation, to start up a process geared toward making sure we move forward with the balanced budget," Ortiz said.
