Yesterday, the university announced another year of record-breaking admissions, reaching a total of 38,037 for the pool of regular and early decision applicants. It is uncertain how many of these applications were for NYU Abu Dhabi.

Last December the university accepted 1,093 early decision applicants to the Washington Square campus and 62 of 236 applicants to the Abu Dhabi campus.

For the class of 2014, NYU anticipates enrolling 4,500 students in New York and 100 in the U.A.E., leaving fewer than 40 spots for regular admission to Abu Dhabi.

Ann Marcus, professor and director of the Steinhardt Institute of Higher Education Policy, said the increased number of applicants could be a result of the university's reputation or effective marketing and recruiting.

"It is always gratifying to know that applications are rising," Marcus said. "NYU has indeed been successful at becoming a first choice for thousands of students."

Students may also be broadening their opportunities.

"I don't think that more high school students are applying to college, but given all the economic uncertainties, they may be applying to more colleges, a trend in recent years, to see where they get the best offers of admissions and financial aid," Marcus said.

Jennifer Weinstein, a senior at Central Bucks High School West in Doylestown, Pa., applied to the Tisch School of the Arts in the film and TV program for regular decision. She also applied to 14 other schools, including Wesleyan University, Barnard College and Emerson College.

"It's my first choice," Weinstein said. "I want to take advantage of everything they have to teach me. I have a lot of goals I want to accomplish with film and I want to get the best education possible."

Weinstein was drawn to NYU because of its study abroad opportunities, diverse clubs and organizations, but mainly the promise of Tisch's programs and classes.

"I went to Tisch this past summer so I know the teaching style," she said.

She did not consider applying to NYUAD.

Despite the current economic times, university spokesman John Beckman said students are drawn to the university's urban environment.

"Being in New York gives NYU students a chance to do internships that cannot be found elsewhere, and we have a reputation for excellent academics and areas of particular strength that really interest talented young people," he said. "We are in the greatest city in the world; we offer the opportunity for an unrivaled global education."
