Fred has spent many nights in the far left corner of the Michael Mendelson Study Lounge on the third floor of Tisch Hall. However, Fred doesn't spend his hours writing papers and cramming for exams. That's because Fred is a mouse.
Stern junior Brian Kang bestowed the resident mouse with the name following their first encounter during Kang's freshman year.
According to Kang, Fred usually shows his face in the evenings — when students bring food for dinner.
But Stern junior Anna Podkovyrova has seen several mice in the lounge and hasn't been charmed by any of them.
"It's disgusting," she said.
Like Kang, Podkovyrova believes the mice are in the lounge because of the food.
"There's no way you can stop it though," she said.
Gerard Savoy, vice president of administration for central housing and senior facilities manager, said that NYU immediately responds to any work orders placed by students, including complaints about mice.
"[Students] can issue a work order to the help desk," he said. "If we don't know about the problem, though, we can't do anything about it."
Savoy was baffled as to how this issue hadn't been previously reported. He filed a work request for an exterminator while responding to WSN's questions.
Beth Morningstar, executive vice president for facilities and construction management, said the facilities management have a proactive extermination program.
"They get the exterminator in once a week and then if they get a report of any kind of a rodent sighting or a bother, then they get the exterminator in immediately," she said.
But Kang doesn't think the mouse poses any threat to students.
"It doesn't bite," he said.
