Bacayu (Esculturas Rupestres) Light of Day, 1981 Rupestrian Sculptures Lifetime Color and Black and White Photographs 40 x 53 in. Upon receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship, Mendieta returned to Cuba and composed many Esculturas Rupestres near Jaruco. Created with the natural landscape and shapes of the rock formations, she carved out pre- Hispanie, Amerindian goddesses and sometimes utilized paint to enhance the archaic feminine characteristics of the figures.
