Washington Square Park will soon see a break from construction this spring — at least until the next phase begins this summer.
A New York City Parks Department spokesperson announced on Tuesday at the Community Board 2 meeting that the east side of the park should be completed by Memorial Day, and phase three should begin in the summer. Phase three was originally supposed to begin this spring. During the final phase of construction, the southwest section of the park will be closed, including the dog run and restrooms.
Cathryn Swan, Washington Square Park blogger, said there was concern with NYU's involvement in the park.
"They're already using Washington Square as an advertising kingpin, in a sense," she said.
But Washington Square was not the only park on the agenda.
The Friends of High Line Park were also present at the meeting to discuss phase two of the High Line's construction, which should be completed late this spring. Phase two will extend the park 10 blocks, up to around 30th Street. The park will also test staying open one hour later, closing at 11 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. The area around 30th Street, which is currently undeveloped, may see food trucks and art installations pop up once construction is complete.
"We'd love for that to launch with the opening of section two," Robert Hammond, the executive director for Friends of the High Line, said.
Hammond also said that the park would like to expand its programming.
"Our goal for the programs would really be for locals," he said. "The goals here are trying to make it sustainable — using food that's good for you and using local."
