The NYU wrestling team ended its regular season on a positive note, going 2-0 this past weekend during the team's Family Day at home against SUNY Morrisville and the University of Scranton.
It was fitting that the Violets honored their seniors this weekend, because all three of them — captain Matt Magill (165), Clement Bommier (141) and Steven Contino (133) — all went undefeated in their final home matches. The victories included a 1:38 pin by Bommier over Scranton's Kevin Williams, Magill's 11-0 major decision over Scranton's Steve Glickman, and a 6-3 victory by Contino over Vinny Signoriello (also of Scranton), paired with his forfeit against Morrisville.

"A lot of young guys came through," Magill said. "The seniors stepped up and it was a really good way to end the season."

197-pound junior Steve Massey also had a big day, pinning both of his opponents in just over a minute apiece. Sophomore Sabino Galassi (184) and junior David Rice (174) each added decisive victories of their own throughout the day. Rice's victory over Morrisville's Jeremy Hoyt was a 20-3 technical fall, and Galassi contributed a major-decision win over Morrisville's Joseph Rodriguez, 14-3.

Sophomore Dan Gorman (149) also went 2-0 on the day and heavyweight junior Rudy De La Cruz, who has struggled at times this year, capped off the Scranton match with a 1:52 pin over Luke Genovese.

Magill and Galassi led the Violets in victories; Magill is 31-8 and won his last ten contests, while Galassi stands at 22-13. With their final dual meets finished, the Violets conclude their season at 9-10.

Next week, they head to King's College for the Metropolitan Conference tournament, where individual place-winners will be sent to the Division III National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
