The NYU wrestling team defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (23-22) and Williams College (31-18) but lost to host Roger Williams University (42-9) as they traveled to Bristol, R.I., Saturday to compete in the Metro New England Duals.

Captain Jamie Myers was back on the mat after battling injuries for the past year and a half. In three matches, Myers went 3-0 and notched NYU's only pin versus Roger Williams.

"It was great seeing Jamie back on the mat," assistant coach Corey Luce said. "He has a lot of things to improve on to shake some of that rust, but it was a great start for him."

In their first match of the day against USCGA, the senior wrestlers dominated with Myers (197-pound) winning 7-4, David Rice (165-pound) notching a pin at the 2:33 mark and Gregg Martino (174-pound) earning a 11-3 victory. Despite losing in the 133-pound weight class, junior Adlee Fayyaz recorded the first takedown, which proved to be the eventual tiebreaker in the match.

NYU took on Williams next. In ten events versus Williams, NYU tallied six victories, including freshman Pat Sheehan's 10-3 win, Rice's pin at 2:30 and junior Dan Gorman's 8-3 victory.

NYU met host Roger Williams in the last match of the day.

The Hawks won eight out of ten, including two pins. Although the Violets lost 42-9, Martino (174-pound) fought for a 3-2 victory, along with Myers's pin at 2:24.

With NYU giving up two forfeits on the day — Janik Santana-Quintana (125-pound) and Matt DiGiavanni (141-pound) sat out with injuries — the Violets needed to pick up the slack.

"Our guys knew our backs were against the wall, and we needed big points," Luce said. "We went into these matches down on points and to come away with two out of three, we have to be pleased."

The wrestling team will travel to Lexington, Va., to take on four Centennial Conference rivals — Washington and Lee University, McDaniel College, Muhlenberg College and Ursinus College. All four matches will occur throughout the day on Feb. 4.
