Puffy coats: The fashionable way

Just like the weather, fashion trends and necessities change with the transition from fall to winter. Thin leather jackets can no longer be expected to protect us on a windy, chilly day. Cool temperatures and brisk winds call for a durable, insulated coat. But if you fear you’ll bear resemblance to the Michelin Man in a down-filled, puffy jacket then try these figure-flattering styles.

Uniqlo Women Down A-Line Coat ($99)

With an A-line style that is fitted at the bust and widens toward the hem, this coat is flattering for most body types. The coat’s top-quality down absorbs heat, but it also gives you room to move and layer sweaters underneath. The faux fur-lined hood complements the otherwise simple coat, but it is detachable if you want to ditch the glamorous accent. Designed with special cuffs to keep out cold gusts and a high collar to preserve body heat, this coat will come in handy on chilly winter nights.

J. Crew Wintress Puffer ($248)

This seemingly simple coat is perfect for girls who are trying to cover their lower half but still accentuate their waistlines. The belt cinches at the waist to add femininity and style without too much detail. This coat can be worn on the chilliest of days, as it buttons all the way up to the face and is filled with goose down -— a light, insulating filler. This coat comes in a variety of winter hues like black, navy, dark artichoke and
brilliant cobalt.

H&M Down Coat ($349)

Part of H&M’s Maison Martin Margiela collection, this down coat combines runway originality with conventional daily use. Resembling a luxurious sleeping bag that falls just above the ankles, the coat is made from a duvet with a removable cover that can actually be used as a separate garment. The large, asymmetrical collar fastens at the top to secure warmth above the chest, and with detachable sleeves, this duvet jacket can transform easily into a cape.

Zara Short Belted Puffer Jacket ($169)

This Zara jacket is a puffy take on the classic motorcycle bomber. You are sure to look bad to the bone in this short, black polyester jacket embellished with silver metal work and a waist-cinching belt. The combination of gray duck down stuffing and a faux leather lining makes for a warm, stylish and versatile piece. Wear it during the day with a pair of jeans and ankle boots, but pair it with your favorite little black dress for some extra edge when you brave the elements at night.
