For a school with such a diverse array of backgrounds, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development showcased a central theme at its commencement ceremony — its unanimous commitment to helping others. Gale and Ira Drukier dean Mary M. Brabeck reminisced about the hardships experienced by the graduating class of 2013, such as Hurricane Sandy and the blizzard of 2010, but stressed the importance of lending a helping hand.

This sense of generosity was most prominent among the graduating students, as evidenced by their tremendous support for their peers, regardless of their areas of study. The ceremony was lively, with two powerful performances by the Steinhardt Singers, as much as it was unpredictable, with one speaker whipping out a harmonica before his speech. The one certainty was the knowledge that Radio City Music Hall was filled with a group of great minds, promising leaders and most importantly, a drive to help the world around them.
