Men’s and women’s soccer both began the UAA portions of their schedules this weekend to varying success. The men’s team dropped its match to the 25th ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets by a score of 3-0. The Violets went into halftime losing 1-0 and let up another goal 10 minutes into the second half. The Yellowjackets added a third goal off a corner kick with seven minutes left in regulation. The squad fell to 6-3-1, with an 0-1 conference record. Their next UAA match will be at home on Sunday, Oct. 12 against Case Western Reserve University, with a nonconference game on Tuesday against New Jersey City University.

The women’s team also took on Rochester this Saturday and played to a scoreless double-overtime draw in their first UAA match of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Cassie Steinberg recorded her first career shutout while registering four saves. What was perhaps the most frustrating aspect of  the match was that the Violets led the Yellowjackets 9-4 in shots on goal, but still couldn’t find the back of the net. The team will play its next UAA game on Sunday against Case Western, with a nonconference game on Monday against the College at Old Westbury.

Men’s golf found themselves in the lead after the first day of their tournament at Hamilton College. However, there were only five strokes between NYU (295) and Farmingdale State College in fifth (300). The second day of the tournament was canceled because of rain, which allowed the Violets to secure their first victory of the season.
