Carmen Marc Valvo Spring/Summer 2015

Cate Wright, Staff Writer

The fifties made a modern revival on the runway of Carmen Marc Valvo’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection. A simple and striking color palette for the season pulled together the joint women and men’s show, as well.

The dramatic, upbeat ‘80s soundtrack perfectly paced the procession of elegant ensembles. The collection boasted what Valvo dubbed, “‘50s inspired” looks, exemplified by cinched-waist dresses and full midi skirts. Pleats, embroidery, cut outs, and mesh that would seem to overwhelm were executed with timeless style, a signature of Valvo’s work.

While Carmen Marc Valvo is known for his flattering eveningwear, this season’s collection was a breath of fresh air with a nostalgic nod to the decade of the 1950s. Nonetheless, the collection read modern and clean, indulging in the occasional plunging neckline, playful pantsuit, and sheer overskirt. Dresses adorned with torso cutouts and mesh insets proved that no matter the aesthetic, Carmen Marc Valvo knows how to flatter the female figure.

Strappy mules and understated handbags characterized the accessories of the brand. However, wide, black patent-leather belts dominated the looks, adding modern masculinity and a feminine waistline to the garden-inspired ensembles. Silky fabrics such as gazaar and faille were printed with mandarin florals and paired with bold solids in shades of red, blue, white, and black, making for a modern twist on the January Jones style.

Makeup and hair was kept simple; low chignon buns were accented by metallic streaks, yet another modern addition to the inspired show that proved innovation on past classics can take on a contemporary twist.

Interwoven into the show were the men, who donned classic suits elevated by texture. Tuxedo jackets in white and black were ornately embroidered and paired with pleated shirts reminiscent of an ‘80s prom done right. If Valvo’s show is any indication, expect to see more European swimwear this summer.

While many designers are channeling the seventies, Carmen Marc Valvo translated the elegance of the fifties to a modern runway while maintaining his mastery of flattering any form.
