Kye Spring/Summer 2016

As the lights dimmed on the ultra-modern, ultra-packed SoHo runway, the attendees of the Kye’s Spring/Summer 2016 show fell silent. Kathleen Kye, founder and head designer of the Seoul-based label, was as young and colorful as her namesake label.  The designer drew inspiration from South Korea’s vibrant K-Pop scene and is a favorite of the genre’s stars.

“[K-Pop stars] are my biggest clients as well, so it kind of works both ways—I get inspired from them and they get inspired from my collection. I work a lot with them as a first reference for some of them, so when they know I’m working with a collection I ask for their opinion and how they should be shown in their videos,” Kye said.

In its fourth solo show at New York Fashion Week, the Kye set took its place as a high-fashion streetwear line with its bright but harmonious colors in both the clothing and makeup. Though the colors held a rather street style palette, the simple music and minimalist interior of The Space at The Skylight allowed each high-gloss piece to speak for itself.

“It has a pop art aesthetic to it,” said Drew Lustra, an attendee who knows Kye personally. “It looks very authentic but rebellious at the same time.”

Though accessories were minimal, a number of models wore statement sunglasses across the runway.

“This series, especially sunglasses were a part of the show. It was a collaboration with Gentle Monster which is going to be a really big brand,” Kye said.

For women, hair was long and slicked back or nestled in eye-catching hats. Though models’ eyes were free of makeup, bold lipstick choices added an additional spark to each outfit. The men wore hair that was more casual, much like their jumpsuits, but the overall bubblegum-bright colors went against the masculine grain in fashion, making each look unforgettable.

Although the focus of Kye’s show was without a doubt the Andy Warhol-approved pops of color, the set was punctuated by several urbane all-black styles accented with gold or silver. Wedge heels helped to elongate the models’ silhouettes and emphasized the chic draping lines that married high fashion with street style for Kye’s next season.
