Firesides and cups of hot cocoa are certainly winter essentials — that is, if you’re visiting home sweet home. Until winter break arrives, however, those of us who are busy running errands, attending classes or commuting to work must have a fashionably sturdy coat to keep us warm and cozy.

While classics like the aviator and motorcycle jackets dominated this season’s runway, many coats were multiplied with diversity in color and shape, reflecting the nostalgia of the mid 1900s. Designers like Zac Posen, Jason Wu and Alexander Wang were very attentive to minimalist styles as well as the use of fur. Long, A-line coats with checkered prints, low-hung capes and more offer a unique style for everyone this winter. So as November sets in, welcome daylight savings with warm outerwear.

H&M’s wool-blend cape ($80) would be a great option to look effortlessly chic on a lazy day. Capes can be paired with turtlenecks as well as simple sweaters. To keep the look classic, complement the coat with chelsea boots and neutral-colored pants.

Wrap coats with belts are a perfect winter staple. Urban Outfitter’s BB Dakota Nico Wrap Coat ($119) is great for a warmer day out. But if the temperature drops, Zara’s Wool Coat ($149) is an easy alternative. Wrap coats have the versatility to be dressed up or down. While jeans and leggings are perfect matches to make the look more casual, wrap coats are easily paired with dresses and heels for a night out.

To emulate the mod ’60s look, Forever 21’s Longline Plaid Coat ($53) is a great option for a tight budget. If wool is an important factor, ASOS’s Coat in 60’s Check ($153) offers an alternative. These coats speak for themselves, with an eye-popping color and timeless pattern. Pairing it with neutral colors such as white or black will make the pattern stand out even more.

Urban Outfitter’s Silence + Noise Faux Shearling Aviator Jacket ($169) and Forever 21’s Faux Fur Moto Jacket ($43) are classic items with a twist — fur. Legs look longer with these jackets that fall right at the hips, and they can also take an outfit from simple to edgy-chic with the snap of a button. These jackets make any outfit look effortlessly cool.

Last but not least, H&M offers great parkas including the Pile-lined Parka ($60). This piece is a good choice for looking and feeling comfortable during any time of the day. Whether it’s running to class or the gym, parkas can dress down any outfit.
