Alumni develop comprehensive fitness iPhone app

Finding the perfect fitness routine can be tricky when you live in a city as big as New York. With so many options, it’s hard to decide where to begin. Luckily, there’s an app for that.

With FiTMAPPED, a new iPhone app, you can conveniently search for any type of fitness center or activity near you. From directions to gyms and studios to reviews about specific classes and trainers, FiTMAPPED generously provides everything you need to know about local fitness in an organized and informative format.

“FiTMAPPED truly changed my life,” said Tisch sophomore Alison Kolbert. “Until I started using this I hardly ever worked out.”

NYU alumni Anita Mirchandani and Michelle Velasquez are the creators of FiTMAPPED. The idea for the app came about after they realized health care professionals did not have a comprehensive resource with this kind of information for clients seeking to lose weight. But FiTMAPPED is more than just a weight loss tool.

“We believe the FiTMAPPED website and iPhone is a valuable resource for a variety of individuals: newly graduated students moving to an apartment [who] want to find an area with a good fitness scene, travelers or visitors, people in need of a motivation and want something convenient, the patients and clients of health care professionals, fitness fanatics, people looking for a workout buddy, people looking for a change and so forth,” Mirchandani said.

FiTMAPPED comes with five features that each play a unique role in setting up your ideal workout:

1) Search: A traditional search bar allows you to type in the name of a local studio or activity in any city. FiTMAPPED breaks down the search into three categories — cardio, flexibility and strength — helping you easily find whatever fitness activity you’re looking for.

2) Explore: Browsing through ratings and reviews of gyms and studios makes it easy to find the workout best matched to your personal interests and skill level.

3) Schedule and Book: These two features go hand-in-hand. Read the schedules to find out class times, gym hours and special programs in your area. When you find a class you like, reserve a spot. FiTMAPPED has partnered with MindBody Online to allow you to sign up for workshops and classes right from your phone.

4) Share: Your own reviews of studios and gyms can be shared with friends through Facebook, Twitter and email.

The high-tech platform makes the app’s thorough coverage of gyms and fitness boutiques even more convenient.

“FiTMAPPED has helped me both with my athletics and my major,” said SCPS freshman Maxwell Hanson, who is majoring in sports management. “With just a simple click on my iPhone I can get all the latest trends, locations and statistics.”

Many believe that FiTMAPPED is solely for athletes and those who work out religiously. But it’s becoming quite clear that FiTMAPPED is not a just weight-loss directory — it’s a way of life.
