Tisch freshman’s blog captures New York life

From fashion to scenery to artwork, Tisch freshman Sebastian Sayegh’s blog, the NYC Gazer, covers it all. Through the lens of his camera, Sayegh captures the essence of New York City with a focus on the NYU community. Despite the overwhelming number
of city blogs online these days, the NYC Gazer stands out from the crowd.
“My blog is different because it’s a melting pot of different people, the city and food,” Sayegh said. “I try to put a mix of things that I see and not just retain it to street fashion, or just the city. My photography style is more about the simple things and just the natural positions that I think are beautiful.”
A fascination with New York City and a hobby of taking pictures led to the creation of the NYC Gazer.
“I’d say just about everything fascinates me about New York,” Sayegh said. “I was born on Maui, so there’s not much to do other than nature, and being here there is just something always going on. The city literally never sleeps.”
Scott Schuman’s street style blog, the Satorialist, serves as an inspiration for the NYC Gazer.
“The Satorialist is inspiration for my fashion side,” Sayegh said. “I really love what [Schuman] shoots and how he captures the people’s personalities. I definitely got more into street fashion because of the blog.”
Creating the blog has allowed Sayegh to show off his interesting finds around the city. A portion of the blog is also devoted to showcasing the unique styles of NYU students. For the most intriguing shots, Sayegh captures students as they go about their day. Past highlights include a Gallatin student with blue hair and a Tisch student’s bohemian accessories.
“I think the captions are absolutely brilliant,” said Tisch freshman Nidhi Gopalan. “I really love the more recent photos of the Lower West Side and the candid shots of people.”
Many of Sayegh’s pictures are taken around Washington Square Park, but in the future he plans to venture out into other parts of the city.
“I want the blog to become something bigger,” Sayegh said. “Maybe even promote some small clothing lines through it.”
