Embrace black blazer, day to night

Given the timeless appeal of a well-cut blazer, the lace blazer ($15) is both fashion-forward and classic. The subtle detailing gives it an unexpected edge, while the black color and looser fit make it a piece that can be worn for any occasion — from a day at work to a night out on the town.

Casual

The relaxed cut of the blazer keeps it from feeling too stiff and formal when simply worn out for a day of classes or running errands. Paired with a graphic T-shirt, distressed light-wash denim and combat boots, this blazer is the perfect finishing touch on a casual daytime outfit.

A loose-fitting blazer is also convenient for layering scarves and sweaters on cold days, and the lightweight fabric won’t add bulk when layered underneath heavy winter coats. Combat boots add a bit of an edge to this rather simple look, while distressed jeans and graphic T-shirt tone down the formality of the blazer. A fringed bag contributes a cool edge to this laid-back ensemble.

Business

A blazer is the perfect go-to piece for professional attire, but the same shape, cut and detailing can get boring when worn everday. This makes a lace blazer a great option for those looking for alternatives to their work wardrobe.

A taupe leather skirt in a classic cut is the perfect counterpoint to the blazer’s feminine, lace detailing. This keeps the look balanced and unexpected but still appropriate for the office. A cream, chiffon button-up shirt underneath the blazer is elegant and sophisticated, and the gold buttons add just a touch of sparkle. Simple, opaque black tights and nude flats add a simplistic, chic finish. The shoes can also easily be traded for classic pumps or printed flats, depending on the work environment. A high bun and a doctor bag in black leather complete the look. If you are looking to add a pop of color, these two details can also be switched for loose waves or a bright bag.

Night

One of the last places you would expect to wear a blazer is out for an evening out. But on the contrary, it can make for the perfect outerwear to keep you warm on chilly nights without ruining your glamorous ensemble.

A purple and black cheetah-print dress is flirty and edgy, which balances the blazer’s lace. However, the black blazer and black pumps allow the dress to be the statement piece. A bow-shaped belt adds a dose of youthfulness and cinches in the blazer to create a defined waistline.

From sophisticated to edgy to feminine, a classic, lace blazer can be found in a wide array of fabrics, cuts and colors. It is great any time of day and with virtually any type of style. A lace blazer is truly the perfect piece when it comes to versatility in a woman’s wardrobe.

Brilliant piece, I now want to rock a blazer. I am all the way out here in New Orleans, and I’m loving the articles Sam does for the Washington Square News, absolutely amazing stuff. Loved it, and will be back for more of her columns.
